Whats New:
Professor Crispian Scully awarded Doctorate in Finland
On June 4th Professor Scully received a Doctorate from the University
of Helsinki, Finland for international leadership in Oral Medicine
and Pathology, and Special Care Dentistry; scientific contributions
- especially from discovery of viral nucleic acids in oral cancer
(Lancet 1983; ii: 766-768) which, with further studies from his
and several other groups, finally established a viral aetiology
for a range of oral neoplasms and implicated sexual transmission;
clinical identification of several new orofacial entities; and contribution
to education - not least via around 40 books and nearly 900 MEDLINE
papers.
The honour, the first to a UK dentist, complements international
awards from several specialist societies; Gold Medals from 3 universities;
Fellowships from 3 Universities and Colleges; and Doctorates from
3 other Universities.

Course
on Autism for the Dental Team at Liverpool University
It will be held on 30th November 2010 and aims to give teams a background to autistic spectrum disorders and how practices can alter their environment and working practices to better suit the needs of autistic patients.

Ussher Lectureship in Public Dental Health - Disability Studies
(5-year contract)
The School wishes to appoint a Lecturer to the Division of
Public and Child Dental Health tenable from 1st September 2010.
The successful applicant will contribute to both undergraduate and
postgraduate teaching in Public Dental Health and Special Care Dentistry.
In particular, the appointee will be expected to contribute towards
the development of a new postgraduate qualification in Special Care
Dentistry for 2011. The successful candidate will be involved in
research in public dental health, disability and related areas ongoing
within the division. In addition, s/he will be given the opportunity
to maintain his/her advanced clinical skills by the treatment of
people with disabilities who are referred to the Dublin Dental Hospital.

Intercollegiate
Advisory Committee for Sedation in Dentistry
The inaugural meeting of this committee was held on the 17th May
at the Royal College of Anaesthetists. Janice Fiske is representing

Holding Guidelines
These new guidelines are an adjunct to the 'Principles of Intervention'
policy document and reflect the developments in legislation and
training programmes since the original document.
Do You Teach Special Care Dentistry?
Information about the BSDH Teachers Group is now available. If
you teach SCD to Undergraduates or Postgraduates or are interested
in mentoring, the group wants to hear from you!
Guidelines for the Delivery of a Domiciliary Oral Healthcare service
These revised guidelines, by Debbie Lewis and Janice Fiske, were
launched on 19th August, in Poole
NICE Guideline: When to Suspect Child Maltreatment
This guidance, aimed at health, social and education professionals
was published on 20th July. A section on Oral Health starts on page
74.
Joint BSDH/ ISDH Executive Commitee Meeting in Dublin
A Joint Committee Meeting was held on 25th June 2009 at Dublin
Dental Institute. Collaboration between the Societies was discussed
and it is planned that guidelines will be produced jointly. The
following day, the ISDH
Annual Scientific meeting, opened by Irish President
and Patron of ISDH, Mary McAleese, was held.
